Mr. Shapiro leads DSRBA's strategic initiatives and oversees all business aspects of the company. He spearheads the court-appointed receivership, turnaround consulting, and bankruptcy trustee practice. He oversaw the growth of Foresite from 3 employees to over 185 employees in its first five years during one of the most challenging real estate periods in US history. Mr. Shapiro has a portfolio that, at times, has grown to over 14MM SF in commercial SF and over 21,000 units/beds/pads, including being the 23rd largest property manager in the country, 43rd largest brokerage firm, and 11th largest manager of third-party student housing.
During Mr. Shapiro's career, he has been directly involved in the development, acquisition, disposition, financing, asset management, and leasing of more than 100MM SF of commercial and residential property valued at over $14B throughout the greater Midwest and select other US cities from Connecticut to Texas and Minnesota to Florida as well as other areas of the Southeast and Southwest. These projects included ground-up development/construction, adaptive reuse/mixed-use, speculative projects, and build-to-suits comprising over 15MM SF.
Mr. Shapiro has extensive experience in zoning/land planning, environmentally challenged properties (including working with the EPA and various state EPA divisions), 1031 tax-deferred exchanges, and securing municipal incentives from various agencies.
Prior to forming Foresite, Mr. Shapiro spent over 18 years at Miglin-Beitler or one of its recent affiliates and left in the capacity of Chief Investment Officer and member of the management committee.
Mr. Shapiro also has worked with over 250 lenders, banks, creditors, owners (borrowers), life insurance companies, family offices, private equity firms, hedge funds, mezzanine lenders, and crowdfunders with a focus on special servicers. He has controlled class bondholders in the workout, turnaround, receivership, restructuring, and disposition of distressed REO and mortgages, which we refer to as "properties-in-transition."
Mr. Shapiro or the firm has been named as a court-appointed receiver in numerous federal and state jurisdictions from the East Coast to the Mountain States and Upper Midwest to the Southeast/Southwest portions of the US.
